[Seminary-Notes]

FOR YOUR INFORMATION...

|
The kingdom of Egypt figures prominently during the
Old Testament Seminary year as you teach the final chapters of Genesis and
the beginning chapters of Exodus.
One fun thing you can do to recognize "the
Egyptian chapters" is to create and use cartouches -- for both scriptural individuals and your
students.
Webster's Dictionary defines a cartouche
(pronounced car-toosh, with the emphasis on the second syllable) as
"an oval or oblong figure (as on ancient Egyptian monuments)
enclosing a sovereign's name."
Here are a few of the ways you can use cartouches to
supplement your teaching this year:
-
Create cartouche nametags for your students
when you study any of the "Egyptian chapters."
-
Add cartouches to Seminary birthday
cards, "get well" cards, handouts, notices, and
invitations.
- Display them as "Attention
Getters" at the beginning or during a lesson. Create
cartouches for Pharaoh, Moses, Aaron, etc. (The
cartouche at the right, for example, is for Asenath -- Joseph's
wife.)

|
In
addition to the Genesis and Exodus "Egyptian chapters," you can
also uses cartouches in other lessons when Egypt is mentioned.

Making computer cartouches is easy with a free
cartouche-creating program from Tontin Software. Click here
to download a copy. This is a compressed ("zipped") 1.8MB file. To use it: uncompress it, and then double-click on the
file CartoucheSetup.exe to install the program on your
computer. After you start the
program, click on the window labeled "Cartouche Maker v1.0." The
cartouche program can create nine different styles of
cartouches. (The picture at the top of this newsletter shows
the name "LINDA" in all nine styles.) There
a few basic rules for creating cartouches:
-
You may
enter only letters (A-Z) and spaces.
-
All
letters are capitals.
-
No numbers or punctuation
are allowed.
-
You may enter a maximum of 12
characters.
|
After you create a cartouche, click
on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. You may then
Paste your cartouche into any program that can accept graphics (such
as, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, WordPerfect, or Paint).
If you are creating "an Egyptian
temple" with your student's names on the individual pillars, you can
use spaces (both before and/or after their names) to ensure that all of
the pillar cartouches will be the same height. For example:
(Please
note that the cartouches created with this program use Egyptian
characters, but in most cases they will not be historically accurate.) To
possibly save you some time, here are some scripture-based cartouches for
you to copy and use (remember that the cartouche for Asenath, Joseph's
wife, is found above). To copy a cartouche below: (1) point your
mouse at the cartouche you wish to copy, (2) RIGHT-click your mouse, (3)
select COPY, and then (4) PASTE it into the program and file of your
choice.
