Some people collect stamps or coins; I like to collect glue-ins!

Through many years of teaching, I have found glue-ins (also sometimes called "glue quotes") to be a great way to personalize your scriptures and turn them into a portable gospel library.

Placing quotations from modern prophets and apostles next to verses of scriptures helps to reinforce the doctrines and principles found in the scriptures.

In addition to quotations, I also like to use glue-ins to help students understand additional scriptural-based information and concepts. For example, a glue-in of the Tabernacle "floor plan" can be quite useful studying Exodus 25-30. A drawing of the various Book of Mormon plates can help students better understand the books they're studying, etc.

"Dictionary" glue-ins can also be useful to help students understand gospel terms -- such as sanctification and justification -- or difficult words (as used in Doctrine and Covenants 123, for example, or in the writings of Paul).

There are several "schools of thought" regarding glue-ins. I find it beneficial to "tie" a glue-in to a specific verse or scripture block (which has the added benefit of making it easier to replace it if a glue-in happens to fall out).

When using a glue-in during a lesson, I make glue-ins and glue sticks available and let students decide for themselves whether or not they prefer to glue them into their scriptures.

If you use commercial glue sticks, you'll find that glue-ins can be easily removed by carefully peeling them off the page. (Instead of regular glue-in sticks, some teachers prefer to use the "post-it notes" style of glue-in sticks.)

If you're unfamiliar with glue-ins, you can visit my website for additional information, sample glue-ins, and even view a short (15-second) MPEG movie about using glue-ins. (Visit: www.KenAlford.com/samples for additional Samples and Ideas.)

If you're looking for a ready-made source for numerous, relevant glue-ins from prophets and apostles, remember to check your Seminary Scripture Mastery Resource packets and your Book of Mormon Readers' Theater CDs.

Please email me your favorite glue-in quotations, and I'll be happy to share them with the [Seminary-Notes] list.

I'm also happy to answer any questions you may have about using or making glue-ins.

Best wishes,
